Battistero di Pisa
Baptistery of San Giovanni (Pisa)
History, nature, highlights and practical tips for visitors
The Baptistery of San Giovanni (Saint John), situated west of the Cathedral across the manicured lawns of Piazza dei Miracoli, holds the title of the largest baptistery in the world. Merging Romanesque gravity with Gothic filigree, it is globally celebrated for its immense scale, revolutionary medieval sculpture, and an astonishing acoustic echo.
Construction and Master Architects
Work commenced in 1153 under the architect Diotisalvi, whose name and year are inscribed on interior pillars. He was responsible for the monumental circular base with its Romanesque blind arcades.
In the mid-13th century, master sculptors Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni Pisano took over the upper register, adding a lavish Gothic gallery of 60 pointed trilobed arches, pierced pinnacles, and dynamic statues of saints and prophets. The double-shell dome was ultimately capped in the late 14th century under Cellino di Nese.
Unrivaled Dimensions and Architectural Secrets
- World Record Size: A massive perimeter circumference of 107.24 meters (351.8 ft) and a soaring height of 54.86 meters (180 ft).
- Dual-Shell Dome: The building incorporates a unique structural system: an interior dodecagonal truncated pyramid surrounded by an exterior hemispherical dome crowned by a gilded bronze statue of St. John the Baptist.
- Lead and Terracotta Roof: Looking at the roof exterior, the western half facing the sea is sheathed in durable lead plates to repel harsh Mediterranean sea spray, while the eastern side facing the Duomo is tiled in traditional terracotta tiles.
Nicola Pisano's Pulpit: The Dawn of the Renaissance
The interior is dignified, uncluttered, and characterized by luminous spatial harmony, centering on two extraordinary sculptural achievements:
- The Hexagonal Pulpit (1260): Crafted by Nicola Pisano, this pulpit is universally celebrated by art historians as the seminal catalyst that ignited the Italian Renaissance in sculpture. Resting on six granite columns—three supported by marble lions—it features the classical hero Hercules/Fortitude, the first heroic classical male nude in Western medieval art. The relief panels depict the Nativity, Adoration, Presentation in the Temple, Crucifixion, and Last Judgment with human emotional warmth and antiquity-inspired drapery.
- The Octagonal Font: In the center of the geometric pavement stands the large immersion baptismal font created in 1246 by Guido Bigarelli da Como, complemented by a 20th-century bronze statue of St. John the Baptist by Italo Griselli.
The Famous Echo and Acoustic Demonstrations
Thanks to the dual-dome geometry and barren stone surfaces, the Baptistery forms a giant natural acoustic chamber. Sound reverberates for over 12 seconds without decay.
Every 30 minutes, monument custodians demonstrate this acoustic marvel by vocalizing short series of melodic notes. Because previous notes linger in the vault as new tones are sung, the single custodian generates an enchanting, full polyphonic chord that cascades through the air.
Visiting Advice
- Upper Gallery View: Visitors can ascend to the upper loggia via an interior flight of steps for a panoramic view looking directly down onto the pulpit and font, as well as an iconic framed view of the Cathedral facade through the gallery windows.
- Tickets: Included in all multi-monument tickets issued by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana.
